Though like nothing on the scale of Heritage Action's wonderful World Megameets in Avebury (this year to be held on Saturday, 21 August - see http://themodernantiquarian.com/forum/?thread=57344 ) there'll be a bit of a mini Megameet on Sunday, 29 August at the Viper Pub, Mill Green, Essex (more here - http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/37/3750/Viper/Mill_Green ).

The Viper is one of Essex's many little gems pub-wise. It's set all alone in woodland but serves real ale, excellent food and a little beer festival over the August Bank holiday (Jake the Snake is the pub's resident tipple but there are other goodies on tap during the festival). Ingatestone is only about fifteen minutes' drive from The Viper so something to see stone-wise on the way there or on the way back.

For those who can't make it to the Avebury Megameet maybe we'll catch up with you at The Viper instead (or as well : -)

I didn't realise the megameet was HA peeps only, i was thinking about popping in to say hi.
Maybe not then.

.... which says (as we have said many many times every year): "All are welcome".

Sounds great. Why not make it a Mega-minimeet?!

:o)

A woodland pub called the Viper serving real ale named Jake the Snake does sound very inviting. At the risk of making myself even more unpopular, may I just add the caveat ... please car-share where ever possible and someone draw the short straw to drive and not drink. Sorry to be a killjoy but have seen first hand the devastation that drink driving can cause.

Please keep on topic. Advice on drink driving, though perhaps made with good intent, is both off-topic and a little patronising. We're all adults here and, as long as we stay within the law, should be allowed to enjoy a drink (and drive) within the legal limits.

I'll lock this thread for a while so people can reflect on what they really want to say here, and what they really want to be part of (as far as TMA is concerned).

Thanks.

Thanks for unlocking it for a moment Mr L. As Chairman (and who bloody needs it?) of HA I’d just like to say I’m utterly sick and tired of obvious downers being concocted whenever HA megameets or minimeets are mentioned here, it's like Pavlov's dogs. Didn’t know it was open to all indeed! And unbelievably patronising advice to mature people to car share and not to drink drive (from a non-car owning non-attendee!)

This is EXACTLY what happened this time last year. It’s not sodding rocket science – if you don’t like HA or it’s members and you have no intention of coming to a meet then kindly refrain from putting your oar into threads about it. We shall all get on just fine that way. Thanks.

I have to say that as circumstances are currently plotting against me, I may not make the Avebury Megameet this year.

There's a better chance that I'll make this one though...

Hi there, as an essex resident (albeit a northern ex-pat one), Ive been intrigued by the info on here regarding the Puddingstone Trail and the place names with the word "stone" in the title. Not far from me on the Dengie Peninsular (South side of the Blackwater)is a little community just called Stone, it has a pub called "The Stone" - it's got me wondering if there is or was some sort of stone in the vicinity, hence the name. Has anyone investigated or should I be the first ? I normally spend my time grubbing around for old stuff washed up on the beaches of the Crouch and Blackwater estuaries (fantastic fosil sharks teeth last weekend from the Crouch by the way, plus some very old pottery and what appears to me to be a flint core possibly washed up from the depths of the north sea)but this site has opened up my interest in other areas. Thanks by the way to Moss for mentioning the Petrified Oak Forest of Mundon on another thread - just up the road from me, lived here for 11 years and never knew it existed ! Would have fancied popping over to the meet but unfortunately clashes with my boys 4th birthday party (and another beer festival). Maybe next time.
cheers.

Yes, its a cool little part of the country, one of the oldest churches (st peters-on-the wall), one of first roman forts next door to it (othona), and just a little bit along there is the site of the battle of Maldon, and now i can list the petrified forest as well. I had a closer look at the area around Stone mapwise, strangely enough there is a very long funny little road leading to nowhere in particularly running parallel with Stone Road. Its name ? Stangate Road ! I took a walk via google street view and found something interesting that could be something or nothing, bike expedition planned for the weekend. I appear to have the bug!

There'll be a Heritage Action poster like the one shown here should anyone have difficulty finding us. Hope to see you there :-)

Ach! Excellent little Minimeet, though the heavens opened up after you left oci, so we took refuge in the big marquee 'til it stopped. Gotta do that again - next Beer Fes is Easter (though this one continues all day tomorrow as well : -)

Totally short notice, but Moss and I will be out at the Viper again tomorrow for their Easter Beer Fes. If anyone’s in the area and feels like joining us that’d be great (from about noon onwards). Ingatestone is close by so something stony to see).
