When I visited Swinside (aka Sunkenkirk) last year I spotted something that looked a lot like an axe head carving. I forgot all about it until I started going through my photos this evening.

Does anyone know if there are any recorded carvings at the circle?

I can't recall ever having seen anything in the Beckensall books.

(Which doesn't mean there isn't anything there of course...)

I'll check the books.

Completely serendipitously, I found this page while looking for something else. Scroll down to the bottom and read the last few paragraphs.

Hello Mr K (...and everyone else - I'm new here)

your photo inspired me to go and have a look for myself - it looks pretty much a natural feature in the rock to me - lines from the edges of the axe head shape continue over down the side to the ground - you can just about make this out on your other (not the close up ) pic.

while i was up there i bumped into a film crew making a prog on cumbrian stone axes to be screened next April on Border TV (series called Solway) shame its not more nationally accessible - i'm sure it'll have plenty of content for discussion - seeing as axes are a bit of a hot topic at the moment ;)

Hi Kammer

I just posted a couple of pics of that axe mark. Havnt worked out how to make a forum-photo link yet. The lighting wasnt ideal, but its another angle on it anyway. When I was there I was pretty convinced that it was natural, but now im looking at the pictures im not so sure...I like it as a possibility and I liked the coincidence of that axe programme being filmed when i went to check it out.
