I'm just reading some stuff about how prestiege axes seemed to be quarried in especially difficult/dangerous to get to places. I might be more interested in status symbols if things were still the same today. If I knew they'd been made whilst sitting on top of a wobbly pole above a pirhana pit, in a gale, whilst being attacked by tigers, they would seem a bit more special.

And the amusement on the 'proper' climbers faces as I clung to the side of the mountain whilst heading back to the main path. Though one of them did look concerned, probably at the extremely pale face and scared look!

Re the prestige stuff, I assumed the fact they were quarried at hard to reach places was to do with the liminal aspect. Closer to god and all that.

Though I'll buy the new iPod eXtreme, put together by hand whilst their constructors have knives thrown at them.
