I wouldn't want to hazard as guess as to when it was done, but that looks like it was made by a metal tool, so not contemporary with the usual rock art on monuments (like the carvings on Meg). Might it have something to do with the 17th C (?) survey? I'd rather think this as opposed to the possibility that it's evidence of someone trying to split the stone.

It really looked newer than 17th Century to me. More like 20th or 21st Century. Could even have been made by a power tool.

I guess we may never unravel this one.
