Pete, if you ride a horse around the Avebury area, perhaps you could help me settle an argument. In your opinion, would Sir Richard Colt Hoare have discovered more or less from his horse than had he been on foot? With hindsight, was riding to Overton essential to the discovery you mentioned above? I've gotta tenner bet on with a rather cantakerous type, and your answer might swing it.

Having a horse is most essential!
For one thing you are 6ft higher and for another you can jump over hedges and take a direct route across the fields.
I doubt I would have noticed the Clatford circle if I wasn't on horseback.
