Oh Nigel, I can't take Briga's question's seriously they're so extreme, life and archaeology is not black and white.......

I was just trolling - FWIW I'm not a big fan of "Polluter pays" PPG16 (but its better than nothing) and I would like to see more open area excavation (it can be much more informative than lots of little holes).

Having dug at Thornborough I was amazed to discover how tremendous a place it was (back in 1999); I'm also a believer in the importance of landscape archaeology (a holistic approach informed by "spirit of place").

Why cant you take my suggestion seriously and which one is that?

Perhaps you would like to tell me what I am suposed to have posted

I may have seen the bit of Thornborough you dug in 1999. It ain't so wonderful now. A bit more "open area archaeology" and it'll all be the same. A holistic hole.

You shouldn't troll, we have no smilies ;)

I would certainly not like to see more open areas of excavation (rather than lots of little holes)

A site is devalued by stripping it of its best features and is less likely to be protected for the future.
