Rollright Stones

It must be a hugely ancient route and I'd warrant the reason the stones are where they are in the first place?

Yes, it's a fair bet the road is older than the circle. It's easy for us all to get too far into "splendid isolation" mode, looking at tese places with modern, middle class (or OCD) attitudes. Maybe the stones were a pilgrimage stop, with lots of burger and trinket stalls....

I know the Fosse Way runs pretty close by, an ancient road shanghaied by the Romans for their own ends, so guess the road running alongside Rollright's could feasibly be an offshoot to destinations unknown.

Have walked the region quite a lot, as it's the nearest decent prehistoric remains to where I live, but must admit, it's not my fav' ancient monument for the reasons that costaexpress states.

Plus, if you go after a good downpour, the local mud adds about 5 pounds of clag to each of your boots.

Still, the stones themselves are amazing, though my missus does have a problem with the 'holes'. They freak her out a bit (she doesn't like 'holes') and those bloody modern pagans who use the site rarely clean up after themselves.
