I didn't know that. I thought one just got handfasted. Full stop.

>Year and a Day is for those who aren't sure.
Well, you probably shouldn't be doing it at all in that case!

>Life is for those willing to make the commitment.
That's cool. Risky, courageous and serious, but still cool.

>Eternal is serious stuff
This one doesn't wash for me because once I'm dead I'm dead so for me Life=eternal.

Which one are you doing Ocifant?

The year and a day thing is ancient. From before the dawn of time (etc) until the 1830s there was a fayre at Teltown in County Meath. Here they had what were known as Teltown Marriages. This consisted of all the (available) women standing on one side of a high bank and all the (available) men on the other. In this bank was a door with a hole in it. The women would take it in turns to walk up to the door and put their hand through the hole. If a bloke liked the look of it he walked up and took the hand.

That's it!!!

They were married for a year and a day. To end the 'contract' all they had to do was turn up the year after, stand at the door and turn their backs on each other ... hey presto ... instant divorce!

I'm a lifer!
