beside the ditchling road on the right heading away from hollingbury is a dew pond and submerged stones TQ 323111 from which you can see firle and caburn.

Theres a stone beside the road, which has a small oval carving on it apparently on the old parish boundary. look at it and think old Boat................................
TQ 323109. if you can findit do so.

i think the best route is out the back of stanmer village but i usually walk up to the old boat corner carpark sans vehicle from hollingbury. and climb fences to get there. Theres also a romano british 'shrine' thats produced an ox skeleton and jewelry and saxon a burial ground just over the hill called rocky clump and theres a big rock there too. you can see whitehawk and hollingbury apparently alot closer together than they realy are.

i know the dewpond, i ride past it most days on the way to work. i'll have a look later.

funnily enough, i was having a look at a stone by the side of the Ditchling Road last night, I wonder if it is the same one? You can see this one from Ditchling Road (Esat Side), it is on it's side in the corner of a field and you have to climb a bit of barbed wire from the road. Its a fine stone, and I did note the view. The sea looked lovely as well this morning.
Reckon you might be able to peep the top of Wolstonbury from there if the bushes weren't there. What do you think?
old Boat? it does look a bit boat like. There is an Old Boat corner in Upper Lodges wood isn't there? Any significance? Also a tumuli i believe.

I have been meaning to have a good explore of the Stanmer area. Have you seen the stones at Grannys Belt? http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/aspen/sussex/stones.html #sites8">http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/aspen/sussex/stones.html #sites8

In fact this site is quite good http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/aspen/sussex/stones.html

Do you think stones such as these should be posted on TMA, or are they too dubious?

hi olly,

dew pond and submerged stones TQ 323111:
found one stone under the trees by the dewpond, but couldn't see any others, are they in the pond? They could have been covered in mud!

stone at TQ 323109:
We were thinking of the same stone, I took some photos this morning. It's quite quartzy and twinkly in the sun. I have posted the photos here: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/Units/socpsy/old%20boat/index.htm
managed to spot and photo the carving as well.
You can see the top of Wolstonbury from this stone (through the bushes).

Gonna go and have a look around Stanmer in a bit I reckon and try and get more photos of rocks.

Must say I am a bit disapointed other Sussex TMA'ers aren't giving me their tuppence worth. Must be too busy fighting swastika bearing lizards on another thread! ;-D

ah well, I likes talking to meself, anyway.
