That's an interesting one Pilgrim. Cheers for drawing attention to it.

The RCAHMS description makes it sound as if they're mebbe oblate rather than circular, but it would be well interesting to find cupmarks in the Shetlands.

I've wondered why they don't seem to make an appearance in the Orkneys. Perhaps there's some sort of association with areas where Orkney/Cromarty tombs are found and areas with Clava types. i.e. If it's an Orcadian style tomb: no cups in the area, if it's a Clava type: cups may be present. Crude way to look at it I know, but I know next to nowt about Chambered thingies :)

Hi, Hob,

I must confess that cupmarks are something I have not really studied (a long-winded way of saying I'm ignorant!), but I'm working on it.....

The black and white picture I have is from a booklet produced by the Unst Heritage Centre (ISBN 09051584502 but it may well be out of print by now). The picture shows series of a cupmarks along the "crust edge" of the pasty shape. I could scan it and post it here - it seems far easier than trying to describe it! What do you think? Know anything about copyright infringement?

The cupmarks may be oblate - I know I am: bed calls. ;-)

Speak to you soon. If you - or anyone else - know any good (and accessible) books on (or including) cupmarks, I would appreciate the information.

Peace

Pilgrim
