Has anyone any information: folklore, photos, etc, on the Mawdesley Blue Stone. Having visted there, I was not told of such a standing stone. Thank you. Randolph

Hi There,

I've also been looking for this stone, but without much success.

The only evidence I have have is on the 25k OS Map for Chorley (sheet SD 51). This is Blue Stone Lane linking Eccleston & Mawdesley and Blue Stone Farm at SD504-152.

Looking at the 1st edition O.S. map from the 19 centuary, Blue Stone Farm appears as Dark Lane End House and Blue Stone Lane is not named but appears as a continuation of either Tinklers Lane from Ecclestion or Syd Brook Lane from Croston.

I can only assume that Blue Stone is a contempory name, for the farm and the lane took its name from the farm.

I would be interested if anyone knows any different.

Hope this helps

No searches show this . Not even on the villages comprehensive website . Nothing abouthands of the grid reference on ARCHI or Archsearch or Pastscape or the Portal either .

I've found it (on the web, i.e.):

"By the road end of Bluestone Lane was a thatched cottage, since rebuilt. A little further up Bluestone Lane, 20 yards or so on the south side of the cottage was a large blue boulder scored ,it is said by ice bergs in the ice age. The Bluestone gave its name to the road and was a well known signpost in olden days. The Bluestone was removed during road repairs and taken by the council to a tip. A resident of Bluestone Lane , Mr. H. Rigby persuaded ,the council to bring it back and it now lies in the front garden of his bungalow, which was originally Ash Farm."
