By the way, I had a look on the magic/os map to see if any of those unploughed islands in the sea of wheat were marked as barrows. But they weren't. Not that that necessarily means they weren't I suppose.

Also I see that that wood we were looking at directly in front of the longbarrow entrance is called 'The Hare Warren'. No unusual bumps marked or anything. But a pretty good pagan animal link in the name! if nothing else.

I think several people here would agree with you very strongly that you can only judge an alignment properly if you're there, and at the right time.

About what Stoney Littleton looks out at - it seems to be the most boring and least significant view they could have chosen - this Hare Warren is framed in the entrance when you look from the interior. Must've been a reason surely? Anyone any ideas or info?
