What I find strangest of all is that it has been preserved/re-erected/moved/made into a folly by this deeply deeply religeous family. They have an unbroken line here for 850 years and remained staunchly Catholic all that time. The stone by the Chapel is the same as most of the rest (Sarsen) and none are Oolitic Limestone (Oolitic..little eggs!). From what I could gather from the guides, they often find the Sarsens in the valley. It sounds a bit like the Marlborough Downs writ small.

You obviously have a bee in yer bonnet about this one, James!

I think that oolitic limestone is a red herring as Stonor Park is sufficiently far away from Rollright and district (north and west Oxon) for it to matter.

Perhaps the only way to authenticate this one as originally prehistoric is to delve into the archives/written records/oral tradition/local folklore that may (or may not) exist within the family and park.

Has Stonor always been in Oxon? Did it change counties in 1971, I wonder? The White Horse, for example, used to be in Berkshire till the boundary changes. Might the previous county (if twas so) have records.

As foxed as you
