They seem very common in the north of Ireland. There's got to be something in it.

A lot of tombs have similar things too.

Any other instances greatly appreciated. I did have a theory about them mainly being at velley heads at one point, but that turned out to be crap.

The Bride Stone at the Cove, Stanton Drew rings a bit of a bell.....

Are you thinking they were selected, or shaped?

Either way, the objective could have been a pointed shape just as well as being a "shouldered" shape. Pointed is aesthetically satisfying, more monumental.
