Tha's what I'd like to know. Oh, well - thanks for all your help - Mrs Goffik works at OS and had never seen the symbol before, which is why I doubted that particular origin.

I'll get the lazy shite to look into it for me!

I believe it is a 'broad arrow',used in other contexts to mark government property combined with a height marking for OS surveyers.Sorry.
