There must be someone out there that knows what the hell these symbols eched into stones are:

Suggestions so far are either an Ordnance Survey mark, or a scallop shell (a la Pilgrims walks) - but I'm not convinced by either!

I'm sure I've seen the mark (exactly the same size) carved into a block forming the front of a shop in Weymouth.

Apologies if this has been done before, but I'm sure someone out there knows what it is!

Thanks all

...and I KNOW it says OS mark on the 2nd link... I just don't believe it is one!

Prove me wrong, dammit!

not that it's useful to you, but 'searching' for rempstone (because I'm sure we'd discussed it before) made me realise that we've lost another from the fold - juamei, who's totally jumped ship, and that's a shame

If the sign is the other way up (or down) it could signify vulva or vagina according to

http://www.symbols.com/encyclopedia/04/0424.html

which has some logic to it.

I think it's pretty much established that they are OS marks, and nothing all that exceptional.

Here's a thread about 'em from way back:

OS mark.
Interested Dorsetshire based parties will find identical marks on the Purbeck Stone row & Heedless Williams stone.

Oh and does anyone know whether the SMR on magic.gov.uk is complete? Its just it doesn't have the Purbeck stone row on it...

Well, I must say I'm disappointed...

I pretty much suspected it to be the case. Who do OS think they are? Who gave them permission to deface these ancient relics? Little buggers... But they do good maps, so maybe I'll not send them an envelope full of shit in the post.

Anyway.

I would still like to find some documentation regarding this, as I find it a bit odd that I haven't seen any. Specially as Mrs Goffik works for the stone-defacing swines!

Oh, well.

Thanks to all those that got back to me on this. I'm off to Cornwall tomorrow, so hope to have a ton of posts to bore you all with in a week!

Love and stuff
