Gone

close

We've had someone contact us to say this Iron Age Promontory Fort, described as the second most important in Europe, was bulldozed entirely away late last year.

Anyone know anything?

Apparently there was a bit of a fuss in the local paper at the time, and the Garda investigated but "there seemed to be some query about ownership" and it's all gone quiet.

This person said "I visited the site a couple of weeks ago and it's definitely gone. The signs have all been covered up and the site is fenced off." ....

Given that Ireland's so rich in prehistoric remains, I hope to the gods that this will be a case to highlight the fact that a lot of people do actually give a shit about these sites, and that this will influence this new legislation mentioned in the news article:
"Under the new National Monuments Bill being prepared by Environment Minister Martin Cullen, the fines for destruction of a national monuments will increase from a maximum of 62,000 euro (£41,000) to 10 million euro (£6.6 million)."

Someone should be in for a whopping big financial wrist-slap, as an example to other wouldbe site trashers.
