Of course I totally agree with you on that (unless the pit where the stone was originally stood is still somewhere under it!). Yet, interesting all the same that they are coming up with those theories (and why) if Mike Parker-Pearson (?) is still doing the excavations (for better or worse). In good-reasoned debate more than from the theory itself is where one always learns something.
Even if the pit did hold a stone it is not on the alignment of the solstice sun set as seen from the Heel stone .
It is not MPP , there is no digging , as yet , solely magnetometry and GPR .
The reason why maybe because big dosh is involved and they have to justify the funding . Who will remember in a years time that it was all bollocks ? It happens all the time , attention grabbing headlines that are clearly pure speculation or if there is genuine data some fancy astro idea is suggested but they either get it wrong or don't expect anyone to actually check their figures .

So the pit may be right there.
It is somewhat obscene then that they are jumping to conclusions in order to pump up the hype. But perhaps if they don't, they won't get the dosh from the people in charge.
The state of UK archaeology is still enviable as seen from other countries (forgiving the tabloid-like headlines)!
