Surely the weight would ground it into powder - you wouldn't need a fire to cause the explosion either it can self combust

I entirely concur that the wear, if we accept the thesis, would not have eroded away.

thanks but you are incorrect., the carousel weighed only a couple of tons and was supported by 30 wooden grain rolling wheels on the sarsen ring. that works out to only about 300 pounds of weight on each roller. just enough to grack hard grain but definately not enough to cause heat. these rollers were rolling over the grain not rubbing against the sarsen ring. the thing would not have worked otherwise. the important thing is that the grain was rolled and cracked not ground to powder.
