Avebury at the Winter Solstice in 2002 was the last time I stayed out all night for one (http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/9934/images/silbury_hill.html). I spent all night in the car but it was absolutely perishing. Not as cold as the year bnefore though when a couple of mates of mine had to go home when the temperatures hit -4...

Nowadays I'm a johnny come lately and just try and get to a site about an hour before sunup.

That's a point worth remembering - there're a good few hours before dawn and sunup. Spent a shivering summer solstice at Avebury a few years back, waiting for the sun to crack the skyline. It's a strange, still time of day.

Good words - dawn and dusk.

I have one of those PDA cum GPS things, for which there's a bit of freeware called 'Sun n' Moon'. Give it Long and Lat and you can list sun-up/set and moonrise/set times on your today screen for multiple locations. Obviously your azimuth's up to you, but it's pretty handy.
