nitpicking -you did ask.... Lots of people come from Bath, language students etc, mostly bussed already, and theres often a premium on time to see other sites, could they be fitted in with the scheme and the high cost. Tour operators will be grumbling no doubt. They should build an eco-visitor centre, turf roof and set into the ground so that it blends with the landscape..

I agree with the first part Moss, see post above.

Not sure about a visitors centre anywhere within sight of the monument (or vice versa). For what advantage?I'd be sorry to give anyone the excuse to spend £60 million on a CVA
(Corporate Vanity Ark.)

;)

That's a nice idea moss - trouble is if it were built close to Stonehenge you'd still have the unsightly mush of coaches and cars milling about with all the noise and pollution that goes with them.

Stonehenge is still a place of pilgrimage for many and not just another sight on the tourist route. I think we owe it to this and future generations to try and recapture some of the peace, quiet and mystery that once surrounded it.

Actually, it's never really occurred to me before but this whole Stonehenge debate is all about restoring some of the atmosphere of the place - not restoring the place itself. I can't actually think of many ancient sites where that has been done before - perhaps that's one of the reasons why it's proving so difficult to get the future of Stonehenge right.
