It was reported last night on the local news here in Wiltshire (Wednesday 20th July), that the Government have scrapped plans for the Stonehenge road tunnel.

According to the Roads Minister Stephen Ladyman, the latest research has revealed that there is now thought to be more chalk under the ground than had previously been thought, this would lead to an increase in the construction costs if the Road tunnel went ahead.

Secondly it is now believe that rising water levels could lead to substantial flooding.

The result of the research is that the projected costs for the tunnel scheme have increased from £283 million pounds to £470 million pounds.

Also scrapped today is the Bypass planned for Winterbourne Stoke, again due to increased costs and the new planned visitors centre has been put on hold.

So the current Government line is that although they support the scheme in principle they feel that £470 million pounds is too much money to spend, so the scheme has been scrapped while the Government look for 'cheaper alternatives'

"A review would take place of all options to see if the tunnel scheme represented the best value for money" (S Ladyman)

Ladyman also stated last night that an increase to £470 million pounds would mean that every householder who pays tax would have too pay an extra £8.00, again too much according to the Government.

So after all this time it has come down to money. The Government feel that Stonehenge and the World Heritage site is not worth spending a great deal of money on. Surely it should be about what's best for preserving Stonehenge and the Heritage site for the future. After all isn't Stonehenge one of the most popular tourist attractions in Britain. If you ask most people who holiday in Britain, where they are going then most would say Stonehenge. If Stonhenge were elsewhere in Europe say France or Germany, there Governments would realise the importance of the site not just for the tourist economy, and they would I'm sure be prepared to spend the money to ensure it is displayed and preserved in the best possible way to ensure it survives for future generations to enjoy.

If they want protests and unrest then the Government are going the right way about it. People will not stand for any 'cheaper alternative', nothing but best scheme should be planned for Stonehenge and the World Heritage site no matter what the cost.

The Government talk about the unwillingness to spend more money, what about the thousands already spend on getting to
this point. There is the money spent drafting up the tunnel scheme in the first place, the lengthily public inquiry at the Guildhall last year in Salisbury. All now money poured down the drain it seams, and we are now back to square one arguing over what scheme is best!

Britain it seems at present have there priorities wrong. The Government are prepared to spend million on taking the Country to War in Iraq and they can't spare a few million pounds on Stonehenge.

So I ask you this what do you feel is a worthwhile way to spend Britain's Money. foreign policy i.e.. Iraq, or preserving Britain's heritage so that it can be enjoyed by future generations for many years to come. After all isn't Stonehenge one of the best prehistoric stone monuments in Britain if not the world! The Government don't think so, perhaps to them Stonehenge is nothing more than a pile of old stones!

So will we ever get the Stonehenge we deserve, at the present it seems highly unlikely!!!!

Don't get me on to Govt funding for tourism.....I could be here hours!

It is not a statutory right for govt be it national, County or district to put any money into tourism...and it seems that they all think the businesses should be doing more to rpomote themselves...obviously Stonehenge and the road is a bit different.

All over the country Tourist Information Centres are facing closure because of funding...and what are the govt doing....pouring money into websites...cos as we know everybody uses the internet to plan thier holidays...until they reach thier destination...don't have access to the computer and find the TIC closed...

I mustn't go on....

Mr H

I agree with much of what you say. And I'm a bit suspicious that, at this late stage, it has suddenly been realised "Oooh there's a lot of chalk there so it will be more expensive than we thought"!

I also think "only the best will do" and thought, if there has to be a tunnel it ought to be the long version not the cheapo one that you know who were supporting.

Perhaps this could all end up as a blessing in the end though. Compared with the quoted cost of a tunnel, wouldn't a bypass (say £40 million per mile??) start to look attractive?

Is there anything in todays Salisbury Journal? I shall get my dad to save me a copy.

Whilst I'm actually happy if this is true, I'd suggest this money will now go to the Olympics.

Maybe we should suggest it goes to those sites actually under threat instead?

Nothing has been announced yet. They are to hold Another enquiry about the costs.

Mixed feelings here.. As someone who lives in Bath the proposed road development (motorway) that would have run from Portsmouth port (that scheme did'nt happen!)including the Stonehenge tunnel with all its costly development, across the country, meeting the A36 to the A46 (already built and sitting under Solsbury Hill), too join up to the M4 and M5 - I did'nt want it to happen. Environmentally DO we really nead more large road schemes carting tons of produce from other countries? carving their way thro countryside and bringing misery in the wake, especially when we are told oil is starting to run out....
Stonehenge and the tunnel had two separate issues going, and Stonehenge can still have its integrity if they were to bypass it it, put a decent tourist centre in, and hopefully make people walk to it and experience the full prehistoric landscape that the stones are a part of. Bath and tourism go together, I have language students, they all "do" Stonehenge from here, doubt if its history sink in for 90% of all people who travel to it.. Apologies for getting cross but Stonehenge and Avebury have been there for thousands of years we should respect their integrity.................

Something has to go if we all want to feel good about cancelling African debt! If it's a proposed road that would be useless in 50 years anyway because there's no petrol and no real alternative then that's fine by me.

It's a good job the folk who built Stonehenge don't think like Minister Ladyman.

"Hey lads, about these trilithons... you know, now I think about it it really is a lot of work. Just getting them bluestones from Wales is going to be a mare in itself. I was wondering... how about we forget the whole thing?"

But then I doubt they took such a short term view on these things.

"Plans for a £67m visitor centre at Stonehenge have been turned down over worries about the environment.
Salisbury District Council said the decision to refuse the plan was 'exacerbated by government plans' to review upgrades to the nearby A303."
