Warmer summers & colder winters is all down to atmospheric conditions. Less cloud lets more sunlight in during the summer so it gets warm. Whereas in winter less cloud lets more heat out so it gets colder.

It's called a 'continental type' climate, Baz. Such as you would find in modern Russia for example.
