Reminiscent is the right word, reminiscent of a mortice and tenon, as I see it the weight of the stones is more important than the actual joint. The joints seem to be no more than locating pins.

However I am just a carpenter and would never think of telling an historian about Stonehenege:-)

I tend to agree with the 'locating pins' theory. One thing though, the fit of the 'mortice' to the 'tenon' is very good, which does imply (at least to me) that a master-form must have been used to ensure that they both fitted properly and accurately. Was there a full-scale wooden mock up made first?
