Orkney Trip

Eeh, ya lucky swine!

We've driven to Orkney and the Outer Hebrides (separately) from Southampton (through Brum) - you're in for a treat! Well, several treats. I'll see if I can furnish you with more info and ideas later...

[EDIT - Actually, I seem to remember someone doing the Lewis-Orkney run in a limited time a few years back on here - can't remember who it was, but I do remember thinking they were bonkers doing it in such a short space of time! They had a great time, though, whoever it was! :) It should be somewhere in the forum's archives if I had time to seek it out... ]

That could be me, we spent one day at Lewis, slept in a van at Callanish and drove to Thurso the next day and caught the ferry to Orkney. It was quite expensive, over £300 in ferry costs alone.
We did stop an extra day in Orkney, because we were starting to feel rushed and there's such a landscape there.
Moth and Jane went a year or so later and did some excellent field notes on Orkney. I remember enjoying reading those.

Hi there

I think I would do it as two seperate trips as all of the islands are so amazing, I am not sure you could take it all in! I have visited the Hebrides (Lewis and Harris) 3 times (once via Skye, once via Ullapool and once flying) and was blown away by them but.......Orkney really is the dog's proverbials. Everything about Orkney is just magnificent and I wonder whether it would be better to have a leisurely drive up from Brum, stopping off at lovely sites in Cumbria/Scotland en route, and then really spending time on the islands than rushing it - so you can drive over the to Western Isles. Ferries will be costly too, so it could really add up, for one trip.

If I could, I would love to spend a good 10-14 days exploring all that the islands of Orkney have to offer.....

Yes! It *was* you I was thinking of! Sort of had it my head it was you but couldn't be sure... Still think you're nuts, but kinda envious nevertheless... ;)
