When we were staying up there we heard a tale, I don't know how true it is.
The main ferry operator from Scrabster, put a special offer on. Any farmer taking stock to market on the Scottish mainland only had to pay £6 return fare instead of the normal £100.
Suddenly almost every car had a couple of sheep in the back.

The offer didn't last long.

A couple of times during the early 80's I docked in Scrabster. Returning from the pub in Thurso one day I stopped to watch the ferry dock. The boat came in, the ramp came down and thousands* of sheep ran out. Being full of ale, and in full view of my shipmates, I stood my ground. There can't be many folk who can say they've suffered the humiliation of being stampeded by sheep.

*There were probably just a couple of dozen but time and the telling has substantially swelled their ranks .
