I've been looking at these pictures of the Orkney stone row. This http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/21800 stone, in a row, is described as the blocking stone. They are assumed to be connected with terminating the row in some way.

The horizon, along this alignment, is interesting but I can't make out what's there.

How common is it to have a row terminated (or started) by a stone set perpendicular to the axis of the row?

At Timoney in Co. Tiperary there are loads of them. There are loads of everything to be honest! Over 500 stones scattered over an area 1 mile or so square.
