I'd second Gamelands. Especially early morning or late evening in an orange light.
If you visit Gunnerkeld (another nice site) make sure you do some research first as there are several other sites worth a visit in that immediate area. I think I saw 3 or 4 circles about there on an epic 18 circle day across cumbria...

Also the two henges to the south of Penrith (Mayburgh and King Arthurs Table) are well worth a visit and a very easy detour off the M6.

I was there a few days ago. The farmer's a lovely bloke. Really friendly and astonishingly accommodating. He doesn't object to visitors parking on his property or traipsing right past his front window to reach the stones. He's a gem.

I hope he's not opposed to offerings, because I left a bottle of wine on his doorstep as a "thank you" when I left ;)
