As both a Cumbrian and a Rockart fan, I must say that I don't spend much time in my own county "on the hunt".

Pickings are much richer and satisfying further afield.

So where would you suggest? We need to be within travelling distance of N Lancs/S Cumbria....I know Northumbria has loads of sites but thats a wee bit far for a day trip (we will be going end of October, so the days won't be that long!)

You need to get out your pit earlier! lol

From Lancs you might find a trip over the Pennines to Ilkley a bit more accessible - and indeed you can almost "trip over" rock art thereabouts.

Galloway and Northumbrian rock art will be about the same travelling time from you, perhaps. Both areas are worth making the trip, but I would say that the hit-rate might be better in north Northumberland.

Oh and forgot to say that Tullie House in Carlisle has come captive examples of RA.
