As both a Cumbrian and a Rockart fan, I must say that I don't spend much time in my own county "on the hunt".

Pickings are much richer and satisfying further afield.

So where would you suggest? We need to be within travelling distance of N Lancs/S Cumbria....I know Northumbria has loads of sites but thats a wee bit far for a day trip (we will be going end of October, so the days won't be that long!)
