Finally! We're booked to go to Cumbria in June, yippee!!

We'll be based in a place called Renwick, which looks to be near Glassonby, so not totally central to the main sites, but I've looked forward to this for a couple of years now.

Time to dig out all those old threads and recommendations ;-)) My printer will be busy over the coming weeks.

Oh, and we're off to Cornwall again next month too. My first major outing since my health problems last year..

have a great time!

After going to Cumbria, my work colleagues seem to think I'm a bit strange. I make comments like "oh look, the sky's going all Shap", meaning it's gone a very fetching shade of pink. Unfortunately my colleagues tend to holiday in Ibiza or Haven holiday parks, so have no idea what I'm talking about.

Have a great time! We're staying a couple of nights in Grasmere in September on our way up to Lewis - can't wait! Went there for the first time last year... The scenery is fantastic! You'll love it... Hang on a minute - isn't Glassonby just by Long Meg and Her Daughters?

I'm glad yer getting back to Cornwall, too. You must be missing it!

I know kciwneR mloclaM (please use mirror to avoid Googly) - you'll see him around Alston, wearing a farmers' beret. It would be possible just to spend a week at Long Meg, of course. And there is that little circle in the woods to find, as well as what isn't left of a large stone row a few miles north.

It's out of the way for Glassonby Base Camp, but do yourself a favour and go look see. Swinside Circle is a joy.

SHAP
Go and do some homework about all the stuff that was around Shap, very interesting for the megalithically inclined. Half a stone cirlce next to the train track and the odd standing stone are all that's left, but originally had avenues and all sorts of fun and games.

Around Penrith
Mayburgh henge and Arthur's Table (Henge), free parking within sight of each other. Mayburgh has banks made of stones from the nearby river and one solitary standing stone left from the circle.

Mmmm cumbria... I did 15 circles in a (very long) day once about there and could have done several more if I hadn't been about to pass out due to tiredness.

Personally Swinside is the bees knees and well worth the drive to that corner of the lakes. Castlerigg is prettier & generally more impressive, but you will have to share its glory with the rabble.

Oh and go see Greycroft, more people go there the better!

Blimey! What a lot of replies, you lovely people!

I've got a list of sites as long as my arm, all of which are apparently 'close to the road', so hopefully Mikki will be able to share, and I won't leave her for too long stuck in the car while I go traipsing.

Between now and then, I've got some map poring to do, both with my mate OS (already bought the 4 main 25000 sheets) and with my other mate Magic for the close in versions :-)

Moth's weblog on the hollywood sites in the area is a major reference, and I recommend it to anyone going there for the first time, as we are.

Glassonby, the Megs, Swinside, Greycroft, Castlerigg are all on the list as ewell as many more, and we'll be up there for Solstice, so that should be a fun early start to the day! Last year in Cornwall we came home on the Solstice so didn't have much time 'on site' before hitting the road.
