Hey Goff - wake up! This is Orkney, - same latitude as Stockholm, Tallinn and St Petersburg. The weather is ALWAYS crap (ie, changable, mostly cold, showers at the drop of a hat, and windy, windy, WINDY). And to even consider camping....! I'd rather hack my head off with a big knife. So unless your middle name is 'Sir Ranulph Fiennes'* book a cottage!

I don't know about Orkney in particular, but generally across Scotland September is a pretty decent month, often drier than the other summer months - I always get more cycling done in September than any other month, so you should be ok.

I should warn you at this point that I'm what you might call a cold weather person, so take anything I say with a pinch of (sea) salt!
