Thanks for that, Ken, its a very balanced account. Although it seems impossible to utterly rule out that these names are traditional, it seems more likely, to me at least, that its the romantic imagination of Antiquarians. "Temple of the Stars" seems particularly questionable!

If Brodgar could be shown to have solar alignments and Stenness lunar ones then that would be suggestive...

I think Alexander Thom did quite a lot of surveying work at Stenness and Brodgar. Many of his findings a likely to be in his book 'Megalithic Lunar Observatories'. I read his 'Megalithic Sites in Britain and Britanny' a long time ago... all good stuff, even if I didn't understand a lot of it... his findings on the geometry of stone circle design were fascinating.
