That would work with the barbed wire, but it would take a lot longer to remove the branches and foliage between the two hedge banks.

Technically speaking I don't think I have the right to damage the land owner's property to gain access to the footpath. I'm not sure about this though. Even if I have the right, that praobably wouldn't stop him from getting mightily pissed off if he caught me trashing his fence. Also, the cattle would get out.

Well, cattle considered, if it's a public footpath then he has to provide a tyle or kissing gate.

Definitely one for the council and probably someone else.

my understanding is: if you are unable to use a public right of way you may leave it until you can get back on it again.

...so, if the landowner hasn't maintained the access you can kinda wander in the same direction until you can use it again.

it gives you a bit of leverage if the landowner wants to bollock you for trespass.
