>Guess we still resent the idea of being conquered by an occupying force.<

... but you/we are the descendents of both the CONQUERED and the CONQUEROR..

... except in Orkney.... where I believe the Club 18 - 30 of the first millenia, the Vikings, wiped out everyone, perhaps selling into slavery the lucky few who escaped the genocide .... which is where this thread came in, with the mystery of the etymology of Maeshowe.

FTC

but did the Vikings wipe out the Orkney population? could the distinctive Orkney accent be a remnant of the Pictish language?

Yes of course - isn't that what I said? We are a mixture and all the better for it. Whenever I feel particularly anti-Roman, I recall Kipling's verse about the centurian when his cohort was ordered back to Rome.

last verse:

"Legate, I come to you in tears - My cohort ordered home!
I've served in Britain forty years. What should I do in Rome?
Here is my heart, my soul, my mind - the only life I know.
I cannot leave it all behind. Command me not to go!

It probably wasn't quite like that, but it might have been.
