Glad I went on the Mine Howe tour today. Apparently at many sites 'Victorian doorknobs' have been dismissed as intrusions. The archaeologist said that one had been discovered at the female burial, and on closer inspection proved to be actually the butt of a spear ! The new name for these objects is "Victorian doorknob spear butt", for now at least.
