Well, there is Right To Roam in Cumbria and Northumberland but it is subject to conditions. If you plan to walk over moors that are keepered for grouse then you will be trailed, overtly and covertly, by a phone tree of concerned individuals, mainly gamekeepers. In some places you'll be told 'you can't come up here'. Even though you can. So it's not all plain sailing.

I am still gobsmacked by the conditions which most people South of the Border live under. There are a few sites in Cumbria and Northumberland I'd really like to check out. So if I combine upland sheep farm, grouse moor and a military firing range... am I on a hiding to nothing trying to sneak a visit to look upon the joy and wondrousness of the Romanno-Celtic Shrine to Cocidius in Northumberland or what?

I'll just have to bring my Scottish passport, plead diplomatic immunity and hope that a Holyrood committee will spring me from some polis cell in Rothbury.
