Hi thesweetheart, apologies if my post was a bit grumpy, just before Nine Stone Close I had walked up to 5 Well Cairn, Minninglow and Arbor Low, all on private land but with agreed access making for a really enjoyable visit and hence the disappointment when I saw the trailer in the Close. I also visited Doll Tor which can only be accessed across private farm land yet was clearly marked and sponsored by English Heritage.

Planning out my next trips (and someone only recently called to the stones), I can see that this whole aspect of public access is going to be an issue for me

No need to apologise at all, it's a vexed issue and the trailer is an eyesore.

As I said, English sites would be much more pleasant to visit if we had the Scottish Access Code here. It's one of the reasons I spend most of my time in upland Wales, where there's a lot more open access land.

Glad you got to Doll Tor, it's a wonderful site isn't it?

It doesn't have to be, I've been to hundreds and hundreds of ancient sites and only asked permission about a dozen times, only if there's absolutely no choice but to ask, do I.
Just go.

I have some jealousy for the world opening up in front of you, I remember how exciting those first sites are!

But like postie, lack of access has rarely been an issue, the few times I've had to ask people have been more than happy to let me at the stones.
