My understanding is that it is a glacial boulder. However, in the midst of all the prehistory of the Shap area it is believed to have been joined with the other sites by an avenue of stones, some of which are still standing.

Shap is an amazing place, hope you have a good time if you decide to visit.

What does Magic say?

Thanks Vicster - I've been to the area before but plan to go up there with my 'new eyes' and visit some of the megalithic sites there.

Is the alignment that is mentioned on the sitepage natural or does it look as if the stones have been manipulated?

Elsewhere in the country a thunder stone or thunder bolt is an old country name for a prehistoric stone axe or a flint arrowhead. They were believed to be good luck charms and were often stashed in the eves of houses to protect the home against lightning strikes.
