BUT There used to be a henge where the Lowther gate is (see Fitz's pic on TMA), that's maybe why the road bends. And don't all the local illustrations have just the two?

I wonder what the surrounding area to the west looked like before the motorway was put through? Was it flat or a hill? Hard to tell with modern embankments.
