I don't really see how EH or anyone else can keep an eye on everywhere at once. once someone's been made aware of what they've got what more can you do, you can't be checking on them every five minutes? Don't they have to presume that people whose land these things are on aren't completely ignorant and thick?

If you ask me they do however need to take this culprit's arse to court and make a show of him as much as possible. The site was protected by law after all.

True, and as we don’t yet know the details it really is important that EH explain what’s gone wrong asap – especially in light of Megalithic’s comment above that something may have been going wrong there four years ago.

Just back from hols to read about this. Absolute shocker. Yes, the landowner should be taken to court and the maximum possible fine applied. Even if it was a contractor who actually "did the deed", the landowner is responsible for ensuring the contractor knows what's what. Besides which, ignorance of the law is no defence.

EH need to act now and publicly. Actually, shouldn't it be the police stepping in, as damaging a scheduled moument is a criminal rather than civil matter. Otherwise the message that this sends out to other landowners with troublesome scheduled monuments on their land is pretty clear, isn't it?

Awful news.

Yup, and maybe use Mr Johnson as an example... ;-)
