having been up on your patch over the summer, i thought it about time I posted some photos. Bit confused over the Piles Hill/Butterdon area and where you have posted things. I have posted a picture of the so called recumbent longstone on Piles Hill onto the Harford/Piles Hill site...you have it as part of Butterdon Stone Row. I am not saying it aint but....it is some distance from Butterdon Hill. Also Hobajons Cross I feel should be part of the Piles Hill site.

On the subject of Butterdon Hill, you will see I have posted a picture of an upright sat beside a bed of stones. Do you have any ideas on this? It looked like it had to be something but what I don't know.

Cheers,

Mr H

Hi Mr Hamhead. The reason I posted the stone on the Butterdon Hill site is that it is part of the row that starts on the hill and ends on Piles Hill where the stone stands. It is the second largest row on the moor.
The stone you photographed is called the longstone on the OS map and is part of the line of boundary stones that run across the southern moor from Western Beacon to Red Lake. The boundary stones also follow the line of the Butterdon row so there is every possibility it is an old stone reused . Hope this is helpfull.

I have just re-read your post and noticed you also mentioned Hobajon' Cross . This is also part of the Butterdon Hill row. Memory not what it used to be.

Peace Lubin.
