I like a bit of folklore ... as I may have mentioned before, a site doesn't exist in the past, but in the present, and has done ever since it was constructed

In other words, they are not "ancient" objects, leaving in a hermetically sealed box of pastness, but have always been a part of living communities. To help the understand the meaning of a site, it's important to be aware of the mythology that has grown up around it. It's very helpful to be able to see how stories meld and differ across a wide range of site ... now, I believe there is such thing as an academic folklore motif-index - it's been a while since I did much research on this, but here's a recent edtion:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0253338824/qid=1043837736/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_0_2/026-0059781-3412414

I'm not saying it's the last word or anything, but it'd be an interesting addition to the site, if we could shoehorn the existing folklore entires into these categories ...

now, that's what the web is all about

ps hiya Baz ... it's getting to Devil's Quiots time again ....

here it is!

or at least some of it ...

As soon as is good for me :)
Ideally on a beautiful spring day with that hint of summer in the air. Though I'd settle for pouring rain again...

You're right RG. People have been reinterpreting and reusing the sites since they were created. Stonehenge is probably a case in point - surely it didn't mean the same thing to the people using it over its development over 100s (1000s) of years?
People have reused barrows from earlier times, included them in their new forts or monuments, gone to them for contact with the supernatural. Or even nicked the stone because they didn't care, or precisely because they were showing they were the boss now. It's symbolism. You can't just ignore it or you really are getting further away from the so-called Truth.
British Archaeology have a relevant little article at
http://www.britarch.ac.uk/ba/ba29/ba29feat.html

As Howard Williams, the author of the piece says:
"This long tradition of ritual activity at ancient monuments represents a strand of continuity in social life in Britain, across the Roman–medieval transition, when so many other practices underwent drastic change. "

Is it?

Presumably, no work has been done on the site since our last visit, but this is the year when the stones are re-erected. I want to go when they are being put back.

Anyway, whenever, I`ll come!

If for no other reason than to be just one more argumentative asshole (and because she invoked cows), I have to agree with this bit of Rhiannon's long defense:

<< I think you can measure all the stones you like but something will still be missing. You can look at the site's relationship to other sites, but something's still missing. >>

Yes, The impulse/need/motive/energy etc....There must have been some prior awareness the "ignorant" sumbitches wanted to measure the fakking sky.

:)
Arguments on this site are like caresses compared to some I've visited lately.

If ye are even slightly interested in the concept of ancient oral lore, and ye haven't read "Women Who Run With the Wolves", it is all about this stuff (the story as primal record of primal existence). (Only women and Non-Alpha Men need bother -- the "other sort" won't git it.)

We love ya anyways.
