Easiest Approach?

close

I'm looking to get to Fernacre this year, one way or another!

We're booked to go down next month, and I was wondering what's the 'easiest' approach to the circle? Is it from the east, via Stannon, or is it best to park at rough Tor car park and skirt round the hill?

My knees and back aren't what they were a year or so ago, so any advice would be appreciated.

Actually you'll probably find the easiest approach from the west taking the road coming north east out of St Breward.

Take the track out towards Fernacre farm (strangely not named on OS maps...even though it is one of the biggest farms on the moor!). You can only drive so far before a sign says private road. From there it is a walk in...open access..can't stop you.

Don't bother too much looking for Louden circle (on other side of track) very unimpressive...the long cairn is also nearby...north of track...bugger to find though!

See you in March?

Mr H

Just looking at the Fernacre postings again I see that jackspratts photos are still showing. At the time we had a long thread about poor old Jacks fateful trip to Cornwall and the loss of his GPS.
He was happy to agree at the time that his photos were not of Fernacre circle but of a stone wall of unknown age at the beginning of the track out to the circle.
Should they not be removed to avoid confusion?

Mr H

Thanks all, I made it!

Despite the SW being rocked by a fairly major storm early in the week, I took a gamble and drove up to Bodmin on Wednesday, during a break in the weather. Sorry, Mr H, I should have called you but we weren't sure the weather would hold. As it happens, we were lucky!

I approached from the west and parked at the end of the track, near Camperdown Farm (various signs at this point state that there is no further "vehicular access", and that the track that continues through to Fernacre Farm is "private").

I was surprised at how close to the farm the Louden Hill circle is, and the Frenacre circle was just a short distance beyond that. I'd have loved to explore more, but had to get back to the car and Mikki.
