WKLB to Close?

Candles as such are actually no problem. It's dripping and smoking and placement that cause the damage.

If they're in containers, and the wick is kept trimmed and they're not near the walls then they're harmless.

Decent gel candles burn for days and hardly need trimming at all so never smoke.

I suspect a lot of people who light candles do so because they need light, not purely as an act of reverence. If there was a bit of a bench in there, they'd put their candles on that, rather than on the wall.

That, plus notices, could be easily tested before the ultimate solution is used.

likewise. Notices have to be tried first, don't they.
If they really did close the tomb, it could lead to really stupid people doing idiotic damage like they did at Stoney Littleton when that was sealed - people so desperate to get in/unblock it for whatever reason that they broke the stones around the doorway. Which in my mind didn't show a great deal of respect for the barrow or anybody who has ever had an interest in it.

I would find it tragic if it was closed as it has been a place of very powerful spiritual practise for me. To chant in there is a wonderful thing...

The trouble is you can see why people leave candles in there. Its the ignorance of those people that has to be addressed, as I really don't think they are trying to cause damage.

I'm ashamed to say I didn't remove the candles I found there when I took this photo in 2000:

I know beter now.

Leave a sign outside and an alter-like bench/platform in the end chamber. That, I think, would improve things.

I would hate to think they will go straight to closure.
