I imagine there's a good few hoursworth of pondering the whole thing of whether it counts as writing.
The structuralist approach , RA as text , has been used at least since Leroi -Gourhan and in my view not really came up with the goods re non-figurative stuff .The post structuralists have ,fortunately been fewer and like their literary cousins produced mostly gobbledygook .btw, What sort of rock/stone is the Tayside stuff on?
The marked rocks in my Tayside are mostly sandstone , Aberdeenshire has markings on granite and are therefore less complex but htere is a possibility that they make up for that by having the cups deeper or possibly that's to make them more visible , you need really good light to make them out even the clearest . The latest discovery at Lurgan http://rockartuk.fotopic.net/c1419769.html is on a very hard brittle form of limestone but the engravers have done a good job on it.
