My memory of being in the cave is up there amongst the best experiences that I've had at prehistoric sites. I wasn't expecting much, but to be there near the ceiling, surrounded by Mesolithic engravings, was awe-inspiring. I doubt whether I'll have a similar opportunity in the future, as the carvings will have to be protected. The custodians want to be able to show them to the public, but they have yet to devise a way of showing them without incurring serious conservation issues. The temporary viewing platform was erected to coincide with the Creswell Art in European Context conference and whilst I was there three further discoveries of cave art were made, including one within Robin Hood's Cave. Robin Hood's Cave is open to the paying public, but you are not able to venture as deep as the cave art.
Until last year, it had been assumed that no prehistoric cave art existed in Britain. Now, I expect further discoveries to be made at other sites. I'll certainly be looking for it in every cave that I enter.
