Maybe its facing that way so it faces towards Uffington Castle, pointing towards the dominant hillfort that possibly governs the region?

could be. But if it really is Bronze Age, wouldn't it be older than the hillfort? But maybe it's not Bronze Age anyway.
My Uffington sense tells me that the horse and the fort are linked, and that there is a third element linked that we can no longer see.
That's the first thought that came into my head, so it must be right :)
