Originally it had a vertical line through it that represented a pole.

It was originally painted very brightly and used to advertise the local lords new merry-go-round.

Hi FW, Are yuo saying its later? I know a lot of the hill figures are supposed to be later but this one has always been thought to be ancient.

For what its worth I feel that is is at least Iron Age and possibly the same horse figure that is portrayed on the Stanwick horse head that I use for my site - http://www.brigantesnation.com
