[Many astro alignments are contentious but you can't beat pasage grave alignments like Loughcrew Maes Howe and Newgrange , particularly the latter , the roof box which is only there to let the light in has no problem with "intent by design" . If you live near Dartmoor it's worth pointing out that the two local experts Worrth and Emmet on the monuments didn't believe there was anything asto in the avenues and rows ,they only led to cairns and stone circles . Many of the old alignments from the days of Lockyer and later Alexander Thom are now considered unlikely .Stonehenge hopefully isn't too far , the Avenue is aligned on the Summer solstice that's is widely accepted but there is no agreement on Heel stone altar stone and bluestone stone settings , mainly due to chronology .
I don't think I will ever go to stonehenge for a sol or equi, far too many people (daft ones too ,didgeredoos aaah)
I live in Cheshire (no stones here) so will drive almost any where, (going aberdeenish end of may)
dont mind a drive of four hours for a good sunrise.

Not too far then is Long Meg and her Daughters . From the centre of the circle to Long Meg herself , an outlier , is an alignment on the midwinter sunset .
